Greek Destinations – Ionian Islands

The Ionian Islands is a cluster of islands found along the western coastline of central Greece and are comprised of twelve islands in total. The seven large Ionian Islands are Kefalonia, Kerkira (Corfu), Zakinthos, Ithaki, Lefkada, Paxoi and Kithira (and the neighboring Antikithira). The smaller Ionian Islands are Antipaxoi, Erikousa, Mathraki, Othonoi, Meganisi and the deserted islets of Strofades. It should be noted though, that Kithira and Antikithira are situated across the southern Peloponnese and the coast of Laconia and are a great distance away from the rest of the Ionian Islands. Some of the places worth visiting in the area are Fiscardo (Kefalonia), Kioni and Vathi (Ithaki), the small islands of Kastos and Kalamos as well as Sivota and Parga in the mainland coast.

The Ionian Sea scenery clearly distinguishes from that of the Aegean Sea. The land is more fertile in this area, as a result of the heavy winter rains, creating a unique combination of clear blue waters embraced by olive and pine tree groves.
